Linguistic Graduate, Valerie Tan, delves into what life is like as a linguist in and out of university.

“Oh, how many languages do you speak?” is the classic question I face each time someone discovers that I studied linguistics at University College London. It is a bothersome yet reasonable question, for the term ‘linguist’ is synonymous with ‘polyglot’ in the minds of the public.

"I pursued a Linguistics degree and have enjoyed the wug life to the fullest."

However, not all linguists are fluent communicators of multiple languages, hardcore grammarians or insane word aficionados. In actual fact, linguists are dedicated language scientists who explore the various facets of language. We’re part of the cool crowd who are able to draw intricate grammar trees and read the peculiar phonetic transcriptions in dictionaries.
